Govt Wants Chrome Sold
Back in August, a federal court found Google guilty of maintaining an illegal monopoly in the search and advertising markets. This week the Department of Justice announced it will recommend that Chrome be sold.
The question is, whether the sale would be a blow or be fortuitous for Alphabet, Google’s parent company.
Google was built on the revenue from search engine marketing. However, large language models, like ChatGPT, are poised to kill the search business. What if two years from now Google says, “Thanks, justice department, for forcing that $15 billion sale of an industry in decline.” In fact, OpenAI (ChatGPT’s parent) could buy Chrome.
One venture capitalist called Chrome and Android “very expensive and very aggressive moats, funded by the height and magnitude of Google’s castle.”
