ChatGPT Adds Shopper Feature

This season’s Black Mirror episode one, “Common People,” is about a woman who suffers a catastrophic brain injury and is “saved” by an implant developed by a company called Rivermind. The implant is mostly free, but then Rivermind must monetize its product somehow. Enter “advertising.” I highly recommend watching it if you are in marketing. It’s eerily close to our industry.

I was reminded of the episode when I read that ChatGPT is updating its “ChatGPT search” to deliver a shopping experience. When chat users search for products, the chatbot will now offer recommendations, present images and reviews for the items, and include direct links to web pages where users can buy the products. The initial launch will target: fashion, beauty, home goods and electronics.

OpenAI says ads are not part of this upgrade to ChatGPT search. But, then again,  OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has indicated he would be open to an affiliate model.

We will continue to watch this space, because OpenAI has to monetize its products somehow.

CTV Growth Is Sports Attributed

CTV continues to grow in both viewership, as well as sales. The most recent growth is attributed primarily to sports inventory, according to the IAB. The IAB predicts that digital video ads will produce 58% of the TV and video ad spending this year. They also predict linear TV’s share will fall to 42%. We’ve developed a state-of-the-state CTV guide, so please reach out to request your copy here.
